Woodcuts of Women: Stories Summary

The story follows a 19-year-old man who is obsessed with women but is more obsessed with himself than he realizes. He addictively follows women around, specifically older women without purpose in an attempt to satisfy his grotesque tendencies. The man is simply an unhappy person who is trying to find some level of happiness in an unhappy world.

Shout
The story is about a middle-aged man who works extremely hard as a manual worker. He constantly wishes he could escape his hard life. The man comes home to bis family only to realize that even at home things are just as hard as at work. Being the provider of the family, he is under constant pressure to deliver on the promises made. The protagonist is in emotional distress and is caught up in a mental whirlwind that's eating at him nonstop.

Bottoms
A man with low self-esteem who wishes he could act on his impulses and be as confident as a man should be. He decides to take on the challenge and begins by separating himself from men he considers weak or similar to him. The protagonist begins to reshape his personality by emulating men with ultimate confidence and masculinity. He however gravitates towards a beautiful woman around his neighborhood and objectifies her as a way to assert his position as a man. Through this experience, the man learns more about himself as he uncovers his sexuality and masculinity.

Snow
The short story follows a protagonist similar to the writer himself. He is a construction worker who transitions into an author with great success with his literary works. The protagonist is deeply passionate about nature and throughout the story, he talks about his love for nature. The narrative is complex and intense. Despite it's similarities to the writer's story it does not read as an autobiography but leans more on fiction.

Hueco
The story follows a man who is obsessed with living in an apartment painted blue. He goes out on an adventure to find women who fit his presupposed idea of women. This adventure however turns out to be an impossible journey that leaves him drained.

Pillows
George is a high schooler who stays at his friend's house. While living at the house, he becomes uncomfortable with how unkempt his friend is. This becomes a problem that he has to deal with if he wishes to stay at his friend's house. Despite initially being friends, their different ways of living further cause a rift between them.
