What are the implications of Heathcliff's revelations about Catherine's ghostly presence?
Brontë might well have meant to imply that it was Catherine's spirit driving Heathcliff to this level of cruelty—or Mrs. Dean may have meant to imply this, since she always thought little of Catherine. Heathcliff has felt himself constantly in the presence of a ghost for twenty years, and his cruelty brought him no comfort, nor did his triumph over his enemies. He may have been seeking to build an enemy strong enough to destroy him, so that he might be with Catherine.
