Unnnamed protagonist
The protagonist is a female novelist and her name is not disclosed throughout the novel. She, like most, does not remember much about her life and has gradual amnesia in that she is forgetting things bit by bit on a daily basis. However, she tries to help R hide away and risks her life from the Memory police by doing so.
R
He is only known by R, perhaps to stand in for his first name, and is the protagonist’s editor. He us seeking hiding from the Memory police and so the protagonist hides him away in a secret room in her house. Soon, they begin an affair despite R being married with a child. He is encouraging of her writing her novel and pushes her to finish it.
